DESCRIPTION

Designed to stimulate the creation of high-quality new plays for young actors, the New Works Lab offers emerging and established playwrights a world-premiere production of their work with the support of professional directors and designers and a cast of exceptionally talented high school artists. The students, in turn, not only get to experience the process of new play development process but also collaborate with an exciting new voice in the American theater. In so doing they learn to embrace change and surprise, to stay curious and compassionate, and to feel the power of their own voice and their own story – skills that will serve them in whatever they choose to pursue. This year’s commissioned playwright, Liz Morgan, will premiere her new work in April 2023.

LIZ MORGAN (she/her/hers) is a writer and performer best known for her work “Why I was Late Today…” (Huffington Post). Her full length, Breaking & Entering was originally developed with Amios and was also presented at The Mitten Lab. Her other plays include her solo show, Deep $h*t, as well as Deliver: Letters to the Motherland from a Foreign Body (2019 Kilroys List Honorable Mention), Our Father, A Matter of Taste and The Clark Doll which was featured at the 2019 Deep Water Literary Festival and nominated for a 2018 Drammy Award in the category of Best Original Script after its west coast premiere. Other playwriting honors include The Torchbearer for Black Theatre Award, NBT’s I AM SOUL Playwrights’ Residency (Finalist), Playwrights Realm Writing Fellowship (Semi-Finalist) and the New Works Lab at Stratford (Semi-Finalist).
