BROADWAY SINGS WATERWELL
The 2007 Waterwell Cabaret Benefit was off to a smokin' start when about 20 minutes into the show Joe's Pub caught on fire. Plumes of thick smoke rose from the back of the house and patrons headed for the doors as co-host Kevin Townley mused, "Is it illegal to shout 'fire' in a crowded theater if there really is one?" The cause was apparently electrical, but there were no reported injuries and spirits remained high as attendees waited at the coat check to retrieve their belongings. When the fire department arrived and started axing up the floor it became clear that the show would not go on. Gift bags were grabbed, burritos rescued by the armful and revelry continued at various local establishments. But Benefit '07 and all that could have been will remain the stuff of legend.
