Cabaret Benefit...Up in Smoke

The Waterwell Cabaret Benefit was off to a smokin’ start when about 20 minutes into the show Joe’s Pub caught on fire. Plumes of thick smoke rose from the back of the house and patrons headed for the doors as co-host Kevin Townley mused, “Is it illegal to shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater if it’s actually on fire?”

The cause is still unknown but no one was injured and spirits remained high as attendees waited in line at the coat check to retrieve their belongings. When the fire department arrived and started axing up the floor it became clear the performance would not resume. Gift bags were grabbed, burritos rescued by the armful and the revelry continued at numerous local establishments, but Benefit ’07 and all that could have been will remain in the realm of legend.
